Nagpur Book Club celebrated World Book Day 2025 by organizing a very special meet of its members on 21st April, 2025 at Chitnavis Centre, Nagpur. As always, the World Book Day Meet was hosted by Dr. Tejinder Singh Rawal, the Founder of Nagpur Book Club.This month the theme of the book meet was “Mango”. Dr. Rawal presented a brilliant review of the book, “Mangifera Indica”, written by Sopan Joshi. Dr. Rawal said that the book takes us far back in time, 4,500 million years ago, to chart the coevolution of the ancestors of the mango and humans. The book traverses the length and breadth of India, encountering a kaleidoscope of mango varieties; the fragrant Alphonso, sweet Kesar, succulent Dashehri, and dozens of other popular varieties.The highlight of the book review was a brilliant and humorous skit presented by members of NBC, each appearing as a popular variety of Mango, and extolling it’s qualities.Pushpa Rathi presented herself in favour of ‘Dussheri’ Mango, and made a compelling case in favour of it being the best mango.Rinku Matharu presented herself as ‘Langda’ aam. She highlighted very interesting facts about the mango, and revealed why it came to be known as ‘Langda’. Ashok Rathi presented himself as ‘Totapuri’ aam, and said that although it may not be a star like the other varieties, Totapuri is a very versatile mango, being used in many savory recipes. He said that he prefers calling it ‘Totapari’, instead of ‘Totapuri’, because of its curvy shape and qualities.Rohit Tokhi presented himself as ‘Banganapalli’ mango. Rohit said that ‘Banganapalli’ mango is the true ‘King of Hearts’ as it is widely available, liked by all, and has only sweet pulp without any fibres. Anil Saxena presented himself as ‘Kesar’ mango, and presented a brilliant skit in the style of Amitabh Bachchan! Anil Saxena said that Kesar mango was the mango of the masses, and it does not need any export quality labels, as it is favourite of all Indians.Dr. Tejinder Singh Rawal presented himself as ‘Alphonso’ the King of Mangoes. Dr. Rawal said that while other varieties fight for one-up-manship, Alphonso mango rules the hearts of people worldwide. He said that, just like royalty, Alphonso mango comes from a single origin, and is one of the most expensive mango, coveted by one and all.RJ Tejal presented herself as ‘Desi’ mango, colloquially known as ‘Gaavrani’ mango. She said that although the Desi mango is ignored by people in favor of other varieties, it is the only mango that outlasts all others in availability when the mango season ends. She said that in villages, people still love to sit under a tree and devour basket full of Gaavrani mangoes.Dinesh Dhawane pitched in to defend the Desi mango, and revealed that the Desi mango is not just a single variety, but there are many unknown varieties, and mentioned some popular varieties of locally grown Desi mangoes. The book review and the skit sparked a very spirited discussion about mango varieties, and each member had his and her own favourites.RJ Tejal compered the entire event in her inimitable style, and also directed the mango sketch. Rohit Tokhi conducted a very interesting Literature Quiz after the book review. The quiz tested the member’s knowledge of popular books and authors, and the winners were given Mangoes as prizes! Lata Tokhi has made it a tradition to bring specially themed cakes for the World Book Day meet, and this year too senior members of Nagpur Book Club cut the cake to commemorate World Book Day. The book meet was preceded by the installation ceremony of Manzil Foundation, an NGO working for the upliftment of underprivileged children. Dr. Tejinder Rawal has been elected President of the foundation for the year 2025-26. The book meet ended with delicious spread of snacks and high tea. NBC patrons Amarjit Singh, Rinku Matharu worked hard for the success of the event.Nagpur Book Club is a free to join book club. There is no membership fee, and all book lovers are welcome.
